Ankle Stretching Exercises
The purpose of these ankle stretching exercises is to improve ankle range of motion and ankle strength. The following exercises are 1. Standing Calf Stretch 2. Anke Circles 3. Ankle Alphabet 4. Towel Stretch 5. Plantar Facia Stretch 6. Achilles Stretch 7. Big Toe Stretch 8. Calf Raises.
1. Standing Calf Stretch
- This simple exercise is a good stretch for the calf muscles.
- Start by standing and facing a wall with one leg in front of the other.
- For example, if you want to stretch your right leg, you will place your right foot behind you and your left leg in front of you.
- Lean forward and bend the knee of your front leg while pushing your right heel down into the ground.
- For example, if you want to stretch your right leg, you will place your right foot behind you and your left leg in front of you.
- Hold this position for 20-30 seconds.

2. Ankle Circles
- Place a rolled up small towel underneath your ankle.
- Now through a slow and controlled motion move your ankle in circles clockwise and then reverse and perform the ankle circles in counter clockwise.
- All of the motion should be coming from your ankle, not your hip or your knee.
- Be sure that your knee and hip are not moving with this exercise.

3. Ankle Alphabet
- This is a great exercise to perform after an ankle sprain since it strengthens the muscles of the ankle without playing additional weight or stress on the ankle joint.
- Start by placing a small rolled up towel underneath your injured ankle.
- Now write the letters of the alphabet with your ankle until you have gone through the whole alphabet.

4. Towel Stretch
- Start by sitting in a long sitting position on a couch, bed or met.
- You will need a towel for this exercise.
- Hold onto the end of the towel on either end while placing your foot in the center of the towel and pull with your hands until you feel a stretch in your lower leg.

5. Plantar Fascia Stretch
- This is a great exercise for plantar fasciitis.
- You can perform this exercise with a frozen water bottle or golf ball.
- Place the frozen water bottle at the bottom of your feet.
- Now roll your foot over the water bottle for 30 seconds.

6. Achilles Stretch
- Start by standing on the edge of a step with the balls of your feet on the edge and your heels hanging off.
- Slowly lower your heels below the level of the step, until you feel a stretch in lower legs and Achilles tendons.
- If you do not have a step to perform this exercise on you can also perform it against a wall as seen in the picture.
- Start by placing the top of your foot and toes against a wall while keeping your heel on the floor.
- Mantain contact with the floor and your heel and lean forward.
- The closer your heel is to the wall the stronger the stretch will be.

7. Big Toe Stretch
- There are 2 version of this exercise.
- Standing Version
- Start by standing near a wall with one leg in front of the other.
- For example if you want to stretch your left foot, your left foot will be behind you while your right leg will be in front of you. Keep your front knee straight while pressing the big toe of your left foot into the floor and gently lifting your heel off the ground.
- Sitting Version
- Place your right foot on your left thigh.
- Use your fingers to gently pull your big toe back towards your shin until you feel a stretch along the bottom of your foot and the big toe.


8. Calf Raises
- This is a great exercise to strengthen the calf muscles.
- Start with your lets hip width apart and then push up onto the balls of your feet.
- Now slowly lower yourself back down to the ground.
